Founded in 1955, the Society was originally formed out of concern for the natural history surrounding Basingstoke. As the town grew, more and more areas where put under pressure and the wildlife squeezed into corriders and road verges. The Society founded by George Willis, actively sought to protect and preserve and to this day, their aims remain constant.
Our past member Mark Carwardine very kindly offered the statement below;
" I have many happy memories of my childhood in Basingstoke and, for much of that time, was a young member of the Basingstoke Field Society. It was great fun, and hugely inspirational and played a significant role in pointing me towards a lifelong career in wildlife and conservation."
Mark Carwardine, BBC zoologist, conservationist and wildlife photographer.
On September 10th there will be an indoor meeting in the United Reform Church, where Mr A Willis will give an talk on 'Kingfishers’ The meeting starts at 8pm and should be a fascinating insight to these beautiful, illusive birds.
